On Sunday April 3rd, 2011, I ran my 2nd half marathon, The Stratton Faxon Greater Danbury Half Marathon, and my first race in a state other than NY - hello Danbury, Connecticut! My time was 2:08:17, and that's a personal best for me by 10 minutes over half marathon #1- but let me tell you, this run wasn't pretty ... it wasn't pretty to watch me run the last 5 miles, and I know I say all races are hilly - but this mother kicked it up a notch with hills at what seemed like every 2 miles and a MONSTROUS BEAST of a hill that was 2 miles long starting at mile 8! That was the beginning of the end for me.
What happened after mile 8 was some sort of walking/ shuffling/ cursing/ running/ hopping/ grabbing for Gatorade like it was a life-line, eating PowerBar Energy Blast, even squirting some nasty GU in my mouth - all in the hopes of completing the race. I listened to music/ turned it off/ sang - I tried everything to help me make it to the finish - but finish I did.
What I loved about this race: Pre- and post- race massages. Plus water every 2 miles, and Gatorade starting around mile 6 or so (not sure). Also, lots of volunteers.
What I did wrong: Inconsistent training over the last month, and not enough long runs.
What I did right: Realized I was getting a little faster than in the past, so started increasing the speed of my workouts, and even threw in a hill workout this week - but it was too little too late.
What I will do in the future: Train with hills. Enuff said!
Although I was a little grumpy and sore afterwards, I'm thrilled to have completed another half-marathon, and I'm looking forward to more pain/ torture/ doing another one. This was race #5 of the year, and up next is a shorter, 7.2 miles on Saturday.
