I woke up on the morning of May 15th at 6AM, to pouring rain - and it kept on going non-stop until about 8:30 AM. My only thought was whether the kids would be able to do the kid races and not be cranky, wet & irritable while I did mine - at no point did I think I wasn't going ... I guess that's one sign of running love. Well, luckily, the rain stopped and even though the Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5K was run on a packed dirt trail around Vassar Farm (Poughkeepsie, NY), it wasn't too muddy - just a lot of potholes full of water, but it made for a more interesting run trying to dodge them. I finished in a time of 25:43:06 - a personal best time by 4 seconds!
The race (#10 for 2011), was well organized, and along with a 5K, there was a 100 yard dash for kids under 9 which my youngest step-son ran in and came 4th - but it wasn't timed and every finisher got a ribbon. My other step-son competed in the 1 mile kids race - and he came first (6:57)! This was his 2nd race and his 2nd first place finish (the first was a 1/2 mile kids race). He got a certificate and a pie (he picked red velvet whoopie pies), which were the awards.
For this race, the men age group 40-49 were super-fast with the top 3 all under 19 minutes (2nd, 3rd and 7th overall). The 1st 4 females were also in their 40s - this age group rocks! I placed 2nd in my age group (30-39) and got the magnet shown in the 1st picture, plus a race t-shirt that all the finishers get. I feel like I put in a solid effort, but I need to devote more time to speed-work. My last 3 races have been 5Ks and with the first 2 weeks of marathon training behind me, I'm excited to return to running longer distances; next up - Woodstock 15K on May 30th and a half-marathon on June 5th.
The money raised from the Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5K goes towards scholarships for kids to attend YMCA Camp Wa Wa Segowea.
