For my first entry into the world of triathlons, I chose the Sharon Sprint Tri on June 25, 2011, in Sharon, CT. As with most triathlon newbies, I was super nervous; and as with most people who know they haven't trained properly, I was just hoping to finish, not drown and not crash on the bike.
The Swim - 1/2 mile (0:28:39).
Shockingly I wasn't last out the water, but was so very close to it. Some people freak out from lake water, but it didn't bother me. What I had trouble with was sighting the buoys and swimming the distance! Since I had abandoned training a few weeks before this (due to burn out), it came as no surprise that I had a disastrous swim, and the only reason I didn't quit ... which I wanted to do MANY times ... was because I wouldn't be able to live it down with my family and friends. A 1/2 mile swim is far yo!!!
My gear: Wetsuit (rental), with tri-shorts (part of my triathlon team kit) & sports-bra underneath.
The Bike - 12.1 miles (1:05 - including transition time).
When I was riding, I thought I was in last place from the swim ... until I got passed! Lol - but I was so happy to see someone else and it gave me motivation to keep going. The course started out pretty flat, but after about a mile, the rolling hills started coming and kept on coming - long, slow gradual climbs, followed by swift, but steep descents. Surprisingly, I passed someone when I was close to the finish, and caught up with another person as I went into the transition area. By this time, people had already finished, but, I had come this far - I was going to finish dammit!
My gear: 2011 Cannondale CAAD 8 105 5C road bike - with (Shimano) clipless pedals, tri-team kit (tri-shorts & sleeveless-top), Specialized Tri shoes.
The Run - 4.1 miles (0:41:24 - including transition time).
For 10-15 minutes I did a minute of running, and a minute of walking. My legs were just not co-operating with my brain which was telling them to go faster. But when I got to the water stop, and had a drink - just what I needed. I ran the rest of the way, passed 3 people and made it to the finish line. Overall time: 2:10:08.
My gear: Nike Free Run+ sneakers, tri-shorts (team kit), changed from tri-top (which zips all the way down in the front making it easy to remove) to loose tank (I hate running in a tight top).
What I learned
It's hard to admit, but triathlons may not be my thing. I like swimming, but it's not something I want to spend my time doing a few times a week. Just not that into it. I do however LOVE running (never thought I would hear myself say that), and I LIKE biking. So - thank goodness there are duathlons! I see a few in my future, but I don't see many triathlons - maybe one or two a year in the future ... a super-sprint with a very short (1/4 to 1/3 mile) swim.
